Training for our personnel comes from a variety of sources. Much of this training that is taken from outside sources is brought back to the rest of the firefighters and taught on site. Fire Service and Emergency Medical Training is never static. New ideas and concepts are always being brought out. We are striving to attain the level of training that will make our firefighters the most qualified and certified.

Much of our training is done in house and on the job. We use materials from professional sources and then modified to site specific uses. New apparatus and equipment orientation is mandatory for every new piece of equipment in our inventory and before it is placed into field operation. We have several certified instructors that give fire service training to our full time firefighters. These classes range from basic firefighter to Officer level.

Fire Science Degree

The Metropolitan Community College provides an Associates of Science degree at the Blue River Community College campus. Recently, the EMT and EMT-P (paramedic) programs were moved from Penn Valley Community College to the Blue River campus. With those two programs, joining the Police Academy within one facility has made this an all purpose emergency services facility known as the Western Missouri Public Safety Training Academy (WMPSTA). The part concerning fire training is known as Western Missouri Regional Fire Academy   http://mcckc.edu/home.aspqlinks=Public+Safety+at+Blue+River&C=1

In the near future, the MCC has plans to build a practical skills facility near their campus that all three services will use for live burns, rescue and extrication technologies, emergency driving with a skid pan, hazardous materials equipment and  related props for law enforcement training. These programs are recognized and accredited for credit transfer to graduate programs.

One of the elements offered with the fire science program is that students do not have to attend class at the Blue River Campus. Classes for the Fire Science degree are offered on line. Many of the Humanities are also offered the same way.

Division of Fire Safety (State Fire Marshal's Office)
The Division of Fire Safety’s Training Unit develops and oversees the training curriculum being provided regionally for state certified fire fighters, fire investigators, fire inspectors, fire officers, fire service instructors, as well as emergency responders dealing with hazardous materials. Although fire fighter certification is not mandatory in the State of Missouri, there are currently over 15,000 individuals certified by the Division of Fire Safety.

Internationally Accredited:
In April of 1996, the Division received accreditation for our certification programs from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). IFSAC is a peer-driven, self-governing system of both fire service certification programs and higher education degree programs. Accreditation is accomplished through the review of certification programs of member entities to ensure they meet recognized professional qualifications standards in their administration of skills and knowledge exams. Because of this accreditation, Missouri shares certification reciprocity with many states and countries, as well as the United States Department of Defense.

Currently, the Division of Fire Safety is accredited at the levels of Fire Fighter I and II, Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, Fire Service Instructor I, and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations.

Cost-Free Training
The Missouri Division of Fire Safety contracts with several agencies each year to provide a variety of cost-free training programs to emergency service personnel throughout the state. The largest contract is with the Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute at the University of Missouri. This funding allows the Institute to provide over 300 courses annually to more than 5,000 participants. For a listing of all courses offered through the Institute you may contact them at 1-800-869-3476 or at

MFRTI training

Winter and Summer Fire School are some of the certification courses sponsored by MFRTI in addition to the classes mentioned above. http://www.mufrti.org/

Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations, Technician

Raytown Fire District personnel are trained to the Operations level of Hazardous Materials emergency response per 20 CFR OSHA 191.120 standards. Refresher training is given on site. The State of Missouri certification for Firefighter II requires the certification under Haz-Mat Operations. We currently have one person trained to the Technician level. Our response is tempered by the equipment available, and level of training based on the city's risk assessment of facilities that are required to report Tier 1 and Tier 2 quantities.

EMS Continuing Education

Raytown Firefighters attend CEU's for either EMT or Paramedic training. This training is given on site on the first and second Tuesday of each month. In that way personnel can earn enough CEU's to relicensure with the State of Missouri while on duty. Our CEU's are provided internally. We have been certified as a State Bureau of EMS as a training facility. We offer classes to other jurisdictions, CEU's, ACLS, PALS, PEPP, CPR (all levels), PHTLS, BTLS among other classes. If you are a medical professional, feel free to contact us about providing classes for you or your organization. We have designed delivery to come to your location.
