Firefighter Dictionary: Q

The following is common terminology to structural fire firefighters. There are additional definitions for emergency medical terminology, building construction, arson investigation and hazardous materials and more. Please note that some definitions have more than one meaning but are spelled the same. Click on a letter to take you to that index.

Q

Quad                  

 A four way combination fire apparatus; sometimes referred to as quadruple combination, a quad combines the water tank, pump, and hose of a pumper with the ground ladder complement of a truck company.

Quality assurance [QA]

A system of practices, procedures, and activities that are taken to provide assurance that the work being carried out will meet defined standards of quality. The assessment of the potential for a procedure to produce sampling results of adequate quality to satisfy the defined objectives. The primary purpose of a quality assurance program is to provide the necessary safeguards to minimize erroneous sample analyses and to provide a means of detecting errors when they occur.

Quantitative fit test [QNFT]           

An assessment of the adequacy of respirator fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage into the respirator.

Quarantine       

The limitation of freedom of movement of well persons or domestic animals that have been exposed lo a communicable disease, for a period of time equal to the longest incubation period of the disease, in such manner as to prevent effective contact with those not exposed.

Quarters           

 A fire station.

Quell                 

Suppress.

Quench             

 To extinguish a fire by cooling.

Quick-drench shower     

 A facility, positioned in the immediate work area where there is a possibility of a hazard to the skin, such as corrosion, skin absorption, etc., for quickly drenching the body with water.

Quint                 

Same as quad, but with an aerial ladder added.
